Panama National Holiday

Featured snippet from the web

Panamanian National Holidays ... Likewise, on November 10th the Cry of Independence of La Villa de los Santos (1821) is commemorated and on December 28th the Independence of Panama from Spain (1821). November 3, Flag Day: November 3 marks the day that Panamanians proclaimed their separation from Colombia.

What do the holidays mean? Although each day represents something different, what each holiday has in common is that they represent a great military victory or patriotic achievement. They all represent great steps toward Panama becoming independent, and each has its own regional and national significance.

November 3rd
Colombian Independence Day, or “Separation from Colombia.” Many expats may not know this, but Panama was a part of Colombia for eleven years, before the U.S. helped leverage military support (1903), as part of the original negotiations to obtain the Canal rights.
November 4th:
Flag Day. This day is more of a general display of military pride and national pride. It's not as big a celebration as some of the others, but it's still filled with fanfare, music, and parades.
November 5th:
Columbus Day. This day celebrates the liberation of the city and port of Colón, on the northern coast of Panama's Caribbean coast. Despite declaring independence from Colombia a few days earlier, a Colombian battalion hid in Colón. This day celebrates the final battle and the official end of the Colombian-controlled era.
November 10th:
The first cry for independence. This commemorates the beginning of the battle for independence from Spain. The movement began west of the capital, in Los Santos, and would be the catalyst for the independence of the entire country shortly after.
November 28:
Independence Day from Spain, or “Independence from Spain.” After the uprising in Los Santos, the movement quickly spread throughout the country, eventually reaching the capital. With most of the colonial military in Spain, and a short battle, the Spanish left, beginning Panama’s first period of post-colonialism and independence.
