ORIGIN AND MEANINGS OF THE NAME PANAMA:
There are several meanings and references assigned to the origin and etymological meaning of the name Panama,
The most commonly accepted etymology of the word Panama is of indigenous origin. It seems that in the pre-Columbian indigenous language it meant "land or place of butterflies", as well as "abundance of fish" (since both were abundant in these lands).

Panama "has between 9,000 and 16,000 species of butterflies, 10% of the global population," said Samuel Valdés, director of the Butterfly Park of the Metropolitan Natural Park, in an interview with Efe on Saturday.
