Five species

Only the five species described below live in Panama:
Chestnut-fronted Macaw or Guaquita (Ara severus) . It is the smallest macaw in Panama. Its plumage is predominantly green. The forehead is reddish brown (chestnut). It is found from Darien to northern Bolivia and Amazonian Brazil.

Green Macaw (Ara ambiguus). Yellowish-green in color, with some red areas (including the forehead) and others blue. It is the most widely distributed macaw in our country. It lives in the provinces of Darien, Panama, Veraguas and Bocas del Toro. Its general distribution goes from Honduras to western Ecuador.

Scarlet-and-green Macaw (Ara chloropterus). Mainly red. The rest of the plumage comprises green parts and pale blue areas (lacks yellow). It is distributed from Darien to northern Argentina, eastern Paraguay and southern Brazil.


Scarlet Macaw (Ara macao). Most of its plumage is bright red (scarlet), with some blue and other yellow areas (no green). It is found on Coiba Island and the southwest of the Azuero Peninsula. Decades ago this species also inhabited the province of Chiriquí, where it has unfortunately disappeared. Its worldwide distribution ranges from Mexico to northern Bolivia and Amazonian Brazil.

Blue-and-yellow Macaw (Ara ararauna). Its coloration is blue above and yellow below. The geographic distribution of this species extends from the provinces of Panama and Darien to Bolivia and eastern Brazil.
