Two oceans!
It is the only place in the world where you can see a sunrise over the Pacific Ocean and a sunset over the Atlantic Ocean.
That is why the Panama Canal is so important, as it is a construction that has been shortening the distances between the two oceans for more than a century.
The inaugural transit began with the passage of the neopanamax vessel COSCO Shipping Panama through the Agua Clara locks on the Atlantic, and concluded with the transit through the Cocolí locks on the Pacific. The vessel is now en route to Asia.
With its passage through the new locks, the COSCO Shipping Panama ship broke the toll record by paying $575,545 dollars during its inaugural transit, amid the celebration that marked the opening to the first commercial traffic of the expanded Canal.
“More than 100 years ago, the Panama Canal connected two oceans. Today, we connect the present with the future,” said Mr. Quijano in his speech to the people of Panama. “It is an honor to announce that together we did it: to offer this great connection to the world. This is the beginning of a new era.”
The expansion of the canal will allow the passage of Post-Panamax ships, the new chambers of the newly built locks are larger and measure 426.72 m (1,400 ft) long, 54.86 m (180 ft) wide, and 18.29 m (59 ft) deep, with two new rolling gates on each side of the chambers that are the largest and heaviest in the world.
The Third Set of Locks was a giant project to expand the Panama Canal. This expansion was the largest since the construction of the canal.
The Panama Canal Authority proposed the project after years of study and former Panamanian President Martin Torrijos presented the plan on April 24, 2006, and Panamanian citizens approved it in a national referendum on October 22, 2006 with 76.8% of the vote.
The plan was to double the canal's capacity and allow more traffic.
Then-President Martin Torrijos, in his speech on April 24, 2006, announcing the project, said that "... to put it graphically, [the Canal] is like our 'oil'. Just as oil that has not been extracted is worthless, and to extract it, investment in infrastructure is required, the Canal needs to expand its capacity to meet the growing demand for cargo, and generate more wealth for Panamanians.
