Manuel Antonio Noriega Moreno
The United States and France agreed to extradite Manuel Noriega, who served a lengthy prison term for murder and human rights violations. However, the former dictator had appealed the extradition because he feared the country would not respect his legal status as a prisoner of war. The Panamanian government had requested Noriegas' extradition to face murder charges in 1999, and in June 2010, the French embassy in Washington DC approved the transfer. After that, Noriega was transferred to France for extradition to Panama.
The man who made Panama famous around the world came from humble beginnings. Born in 1934, Manuel Noriega was raised in a foster home and enlisted in the Panamanian army as a cadet at age fourteen. However, he was nicknamed the pineapple face because of his scarred face.
Noriega was found guilty of eight counts of murder, including the killing of opposition leader Hugo Spadafora. His conviction sparked criticism from international organizations. The trial lasted a year, and he spent most of his time in jail. His trial was a sham because the jury was instructed not to consider the political side of the case. In jail, Noriega was kept under minimal security, but his Panamanian uniform was not removed.
Noriega was born in 1934 in Panama City. He later served in the Panamanian embassy in Peru. The Panamanian National Guard appointed Noriega as its de facto leader in 1969. He was a loyal soldier under General Omar Torrijos, and his relationship with Torrijos made him a key source of information. Despite his high political position, his military training had made him a CIA operative.
