Panama has two species of golden frogs, the Atelopus zeteki and the Atelopus varius, both threatened by habitat loss, illegal sale and the fungus chytridiomycosis. (…) The golden frog has become an ecological and cultural symbol of the country. For the indigenous people of our ancestors it was a very special animal. Because of its beauty, they considered it worthy of veneration and copied it in gold and clay talismans. And since 2010, by law, every August 14th the species has its National Day. From August 13th to 17th, the Panama Amphibian Rescue and Conservation Project and the STRI hold the National Golden Frog Festival.
